üReport your annual data and get your school on the county bluebird map
Be mindful when you check the boxes, sometimes other creatures find comfort in there!
Monitoring Procedure:
1.Print one data sheet/box (attached or on website) 2.Knock on box to see if “anyone is home” 3.Stand to the side when you open to give the mom or others a chance to escape (be careful of wasps). 4. Record what you see 5.Report your annual data (see Going Green Website for contact info) Note: Remove any predator’s nests: For drawings of different nests, see: http://www.nabluebirdsociety.org/monitoring.htm
When to check the boxes? ·Begin Checking the nest boxes April 1 ·Check the boxes every 2 weeks until you see a nest (bluebird neatly made nests are made of fine grasses or pine straw) Once a nest is present, check weekly until babies are 2 weeks old. ·Around 18-21days birds will fledge, so if you check on them after the 2 week period, they may fly out prematurely. ·Once babies have fledged (left the nest), remove old nest ·Each box may host 2-4 broods per season
Why Monitor the Boxes? vMost of all because…kids love it! Also, vCalvert County wants to know how many bluebirds are present vRemoving old nests keeps the new brood safe from predators (raccoon’s hands) being able to reach them easily. vWe do not want to encourage house sparrow numbers
