CONFERENCE KEYNOTE SPEAKERS


Harry Kerasidis, M.D., Neurologist in Calvert County


Dr. Harry Kerasidis will present the nuts and bolts of ADHD.  Participants will learn from a medical perspective, what it is, how it is diagnosed and treated.


 


Johnny Hughes, US Marshall


Sexual abuse is difficult to talk about, yet the public needs to be educated and aware of the impact and ramifications of child sexual abuse.  This presenter will help us capture the profile of an abuser, how they think and what we need to be aware of.


 


Charlie Appelstein, MSW


No Bad Kids, Just Bad Choices and Bad Circumstances


An overview of Charlie’s approach to helping parents, teachers and therapists intervene with troubled behaviors of children and adolescents will be presented.  Charlie will share his model and successes as he travels around the country working with agencies and lecturing on this topic.  Charlie is entertaining & dynamic!

Child sexual abuse is a very serious phenomenon that is growing in number as we experience increased stress caused by problems in marital relationships and slump in the economy.  Parents need to be keenly aware of the impact of child sexual abuse, and what to do once it is suspected or disclosed.  Don’t miss this important session.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS


 


A) A New Framework for Understanding ADHD: A    Toolbox for Parents, Teachers & Professionals


Terry Long, BA, Certified in Applied Neuroscience, Integrated Arts Coordinator for The Children’s Guild


Brain-scanning technology will be used to illustrate the physiological differences in the development of brain with AD/HD and explores how the AD/HD brain works differently than the non-AD/HD.  Scores of practical interventions for improving learning and behavior in children and young adults with AD/HD will be presented.  This is an uplifting and energizing presentation you will not want to miss!


 


B) No Such Thing as a Bad Kid

Children who misbehave often get a “bad rap” from parents, teachers and their peers.  The fact is, according to Charlie, there is no such thing as a bad kid, just bad circumstances, and bad choices.  This innovative and one-of-a-kind presenter will provide practical ideas to help solve severe behavior problems among children and adolescents.  Don’t miss this great presentation!


 


C) Individualized Educational Plan, Learning from an Expert

Parents are often baffled by learning disabilities particularly when it is not obvious until school age.  Learning how to advocate for your child requires knowledge.  This workshop will provide the nuts and bolts of navigating through the special education process to help your child get an adequate IEP, IDEA principles and services needed.


 


D) Managing the Angry Child


Sonia Hinds, APRN, BC, Nurse Psychotherapist, Founder & Director of Barstow Acres Children’s Center


Anger is a common emotion, yet it is most misunderstood.  Learn about how negative self-talk, taking responsibility and increasing self-awareness in order to tame ANGER that is out of control.  Practical strategies for children and parents will be discussed and practiced.


 


E) Managing Behaviors: Effective Parenting Strategies

In order to succeed, all children need the Crucial 4 C’s, which are: to Connect, to Feel Capable, to Count, & to have Courage. This Adlerian child-rearing approach will offer tools that can be adapted by parents, teachers and those who work with children and their parents. 


 


F) What is Your Temperament Style/ What is Your Child’s Temperament Style?

Everyone has a specific relating style that compliments and conflicts, and styles often clash.  Individuals learn to relate according to their needs.  Our unique temperament is that genetic makeup that forms our behavior, and reflects “the real me,” the individual under pressure.  Personality is the “face” that the individual shows others.  This workshop will focus on helping parents understand their own temperament and that of their children, in order to reach their full potential based on their unique wiring.


 


G) Strengthening the Marital/Committed Relationship

When children misbehave it is often a response to discord among parents.  While parents are trying to figure out how to manage the children, the relationship between them may be falling apart.  Whatever the cause, attend this session and learn what you can do to rekindle or improve the marital/committed relationship.


 


H) Fostering Social Skills Using Barstow Acres Social Skills Model

Children with AD/HD, Asperger’s Syndrome, Selective Mutism and children without formal diagnoses often have problems relating to their peers.  The end result is often social isolation, being bullied, low self-esteem and depression.  Learn about Barstow’s social skills model, which uses an integrative approach, including: social skills training, Therapeutic Yoga, Art Therapy, Brain Gym, as well as simultaneous Adlerian Parent Education Series.  Attend this session and come away with an understanding of options for your child and family.


 


IA & IB) Preventing, Disclosing & Intervening with Child Sexual Abuse (This is a Two part workshop)

Sexual abuse is a parent’s biggest fear.  This workshop will describe for parents, teachers and clinicians the profile of a sexual predator, how to educate your child and what steps to take if you suspect abuse.  Additionally, critical info from a legal perspective and advice from a parent will be shared.


 


 


J) Sensory Integration Dysfunction


Kathy Moore, Occupational Therapist, Director of Rehabilitation Services at Calvert Memorial Hospital


Highlights key symptoms and the occupational therapists approach to treatment.  Learn how to know if your child has sensory integration dysfunction, which commonly co-occurs with developmental disorders, and what to do about it.


 


K) Brain Gym® 101


Denise Figueiredo, certified Brain Gym Instructor


Learn simple and enjoyable movements and activities that can be used with students to enhance the experience of whole brain learning.  These activities make all types of learning easier but are especially effective with academic skills.


 


L) Planning for Future of Child or Dependent with Special Needs


Patrick Malachowski, MetLife Representative


This presentation will help parents and guardians make decisions to ensure the safety and financial security of their child with a disability or any dependent child.  Participants will learn about government benefits eligibility, guardianship procedures and lots of useful information.


 


CEU INFORMATION


6 CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS/CREDITS OFFERED PER DAY


This training is cosponsored by CBPS to provide CEUs.  CBPS is approved by the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners to sponsor Category I continuing education programs.  Each full day of training offers six CEUs (8am – 5pm).  Certificates are awarded at the end of training.  Cost is an additional $10 per day.  If you would like to receive a certificate for CEU’s, please submit a check payable to the order of: CBPS.


Recognized by the National Board of Certified Counselors to offer continuing education for National Certified Counselors.  NBCC Provider #5763.  Approved by the Maryland Board of Psychology to sponsor Category A continuing education programs.  Approved by the Board of Behavioral Sciences in California to offer CEUs for MFCC and LCSW.  Approval # PCE 1466. CBPS maintains responsibility for the training.  Submitted for approval to provide Continuing Education Hours for teachers through MSDE.
